Aviva Aron-Dine has been appointed to succeed Wendy Edelberg as director of The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution. Aron-Dine will also join the Economic Studies program at Brookings as a senior fellow.
The Hamilton Project (THP), launched in 2006, seeks to advance inclusive economic growth. The Hamilton Project produces economic analyses and commissions innovative, evidence-based policy proposals from leading experts to drive the future of economic policy.
Aron-Dine will begin her tenure with The Hamilton Project at Brookings on March 31, 2025. She most recently served as acting assistant secretary for tax policy at the Department of the Treasury, as a deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of the National Economic Council and as the executive associate director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Previously, she served as vice president for health policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, as a senior counselor to the secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services and as chief economist of OMB. She holds a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BA in philosophy from Swarthmore College.
“It is a great privilege to join The Hamilton Project,” said Aron-Dine. “I’m excited to partner with leading economists, the Advisory Council, and THP staff to bring new ideas and rigorous analysis to critical policy challenges.”
Aron-Dine has engaged with a broad portfolio of policy issues, equipping her to lead The Hamilton Project’s work during a critical and uncertain time in economic policymaking. She made significant contributions to the implementation and defense of the Affordable Care Act and to the implementation of the clean energy tax credits of the Inflation Reduction Act, among other fiscal, health and anti-poverty policies.
Jason Furman, former director of The Hamilton Project and former chair of the Council of Economic Advisors, said: “I was blown away when I first worked with Aviva 20 years ago. There is no fiscal policymaker or thinker of her generation who exceeds her in her combination of analytical insight, rigorous thinking and commitment to using all the tools of government to advance shared prosperity.”
Aron-Dine is the latest in the succession of Hamilton Project directors who have played a significant role in shaping and informing the economic policy conversation.
Robert E. Rubin, one of the founders of The Hamilton Project and former U.S. Treasury Secretary, offered his appreciation for the work of outgoing director Wendy Edelberg: “Wendy has done a terrific job as our director, and we are grateful for her strong leadership and advancement of the work of The Hamilton Project. Throughout her tenure, The Hamilton Project has commissioned groundbreaking policy proposals, convened tremendously successful conversations and advanced impactful economic analyses offering insight into inflation, immigration and the labor market.” Edelberg will remain a senior fellow at Brookings and join The Hamilton Project Advisory Council.
In addition to Aron-Dine, The Hamilton Project leadership team includes the Project’s managing director, Este Griffith, who oversees the daily operations, outreach and communications for the Project; and Lauren Bauer, who serves as associate director and as a fellow in the Economic Studies program. The Hamilton Project is guided by an Advisory Council of academics, business leaders and former policymakers.
